Rio de Janeiro is growing in popularity, at least according to the number of international tourists deciding to take a Brazil vacation. According to a study conducted by the Brazilian Tourism Board (called Embratur), the number of international tourists who took a trip to Brazil in 2010 increased 8 percent compared to the previous year.
The exact number of international tourists in 2010 was 1.61 million visitors, compared to 1.49 million visitors in 2001. This is an increase of 120,000 people. It is also the highest number of foreign tourists to visit Brazil in the past five years. The numbers were dramatically higher during Carnival, which takes place in March. The Brazil Tourism Secretary said 131 percent more foreign tourists visited Rio de Janeiro during Carnival than expected, and that next year they expect an increase of 300,000 tourists for the Rock in Rio festival. This is famed to be the biggest music festival in the world.
You can expect even more people to start booking a trip to Brazil, because Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games. They will also host the final tournament of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
