UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi has thrown her weight behind greater land rights of farmers and expressed her concern over development must not result in loss of large fertile tracts and damage to environment.

Land Acquisition Amendment bill, currently in controversy for the Yamuna Expressway project in UP, has received a major fillip, with Congress President Sonia Gandhi supporting a balanced approach in acquiring land for industrial growth without losing large fertile tracts.

“New industries and infrastructure cannot be built without acquiring land. This is obvious and there is no argument about it. But land acquisition must be done in a manner that it does not result into the loss of large tracts of fertile and productive agriculture land that is so essential to grow food grains for our people,” she said.

Putting stress on proper rehabilitation of affected farmers, Congress President said, “Farmers must be provided with adequate compensation and alternative occupations where their lands are acquired.”
