Somebody in our capitol finally wised up to the fact that we needed to have a definite agenda in Afghanistan based on achievable goals. It seems that the mission before the latest us troop surge was to kill the Taliban. Someone somewhere finally figured out that wasn’t a realistic goal. This is a different type of war. There are no armies lined up on the battlefield in this one slugging it out toe to toe. Our enemy is a fleeting disappearing foe who hits through any means that he can without showing his face. He is being mass produced in radical Islamic factories which turn out thousands of killers each day.
There will always be low level operatives to perform the dirty work for al-Qaeda. When our leaders revised the goals and objectives of the war, I believe that they came up with the right plan. We had to change our idea of victory from conventional ways of thinking. We redefined success to be the creation of a peace plan in the region and the establishment and empowering of the new government. We came up with a plan which is achievable because it allows both sides to save face and bow out gracefully. It also leaves the battlefield with a system in place for the future government of Afghanistan. In order to do this we realized that we needed to win the hearts and minds of the people of Afghanistan. This took the war to a whole new level by integrating the local populace into the conflict. We integrated them on our side. This adds a whole new dimension to the war and gives us an advantage that we can’t measure.
